Long-Reining – Blog 06 – Rein-Back, tilt pelvis

Longreining – Part 06

Arbeit am langen Zügel – Teil 06

Rein-back, lower Croup

  • In the last Blog we started working in trot. We practised various positions and hand-changes, which need more coordination in trot. We added voltes and serpentines lines and further practised accurate steering.

Rein-Back:

  • In this Blog we want to explain the rein-back to our horse. What we want to achieve is a horse backing up with his head low and relaxed, with active but not hurried steps backward and diagonal (as in trot, but reversed).
  • If you initiate the rein-back by pulling on the reins, the horse will rip his head up, possibly open his mouth wide in protest, and hollow his back, cramping up his entire body. His steps will be faltering and irregular instead of a clean 2-beat.

When you pull you will typically see a high head, hollow back and mouth open in protest.

Prep-Games:

  • A very useful game to play as a preparation for the rein-back is the “Step-Let Game” shown in my book “From Leading to Liberty” (p. 244 ), also demonstrated in my films “Playing with Horses”. Here we still work in a halter and on a lead rope, next to the horse, and use voice and body language to explain what we want. The aim of this game is to achieve clean, short and active steps from the horse, forward as well as backward, and with clean transitions between the two directions without a stop in between.

Vorbereitung:

It is the anticipation of the reversal in direction which makes the horse shorten his steps. The tilting of the pelvis brings the hind legs more under the belly, which leads to a natural collection.

On the long-reins:

  • We start the rein-back from right behind the horse at first, which is easiest for straightness, but also means that he can’t see our body language. After playing the prep-game, the horse is now familiar with our clear voice command “back-up!” Instead of pulling on the reins we vibrate both of them, as we did on the lead rope before.
  • Because he now has a bit in his mouth, most likely the horse will nevertheless lift his head and in doing so might hollow his back, so we must teach him also the first step of collection. Collection means that the horse brings his hind feet deeper under his body and toward his gravity point, thus taking on more weight with the hind quarters.

Start with “Action- Reaction” in Halt:

  • We start by repeating our “action – reaction” exercise according to Philippe Karl (“The School of Légèreté”) and, first in halt, raise both reins as high as possible to make the horse counter-push into the bit, at which moment we instantly give with both reins. (We mentioned earlier Ph. Karl’s videos “The School of Légèreté”, which are essential for learning how to explain this to the horse from the ground – which you have to do before you can ask for it on the long-reins.)
  • The horse must learn this from the front first, so he already understands what we want by lifting both reins, since, as mentioned before, it is not possible from the position behind the horse to lift the reins quite high enough to make the aid truly affect the corners of the mouth only, as Ph. Karl’s method requires.

Karl Methode verlangt.

  • Do not pull!  To accentuate the aid we vibrate the reins – pulling is of course totally counter-productive! We combine this with our voice aid “back-up!”  If the horse does not get it, repeat the “Step-let Game” to make him active and responsive to your voice command and rein aids.
  • Keep the horse absolutely straight. If you are holding the whip in the “high” position, you can apply light touches on the right or left flank to help with straightness as necessary. Be gentle with your whip aids, as the horse might get nervous with you outside of his field of vision – if so, step to the side so he can see you. Make success easy for him!

The concept of collection – prep-game:

  • I mentioned above that collecting means bringing the hind feet closer under the belly. To explain this concept to the horse I have a special game in my book “From Leading to Liberty” which we call “ Backwards with Lowered Croup” (game 62, p. 242), also demonstrated in my films “Playing with Horses” (part 3).
  • The game has three parts: achieving active small steps without hind feet pushing out, fluidly reversing direction AND, what is most important, inducing the horse to lower his croup. By gently touching the horse’s dock with the whip as shown there we cause the horse to tilt his pelvis. This naturally leads to a rounded back and lowered head – and relaxation. Exactly what we want!Ask for a tilt in the pelvis:After step one and two of the game, the horse is attentive and calm. When you touch the horse’s dock he will now consciously clamp his tail down (but without getting nervous), so that his pelvis tilts as the croup lowers. As soon as he does that – you stop and praise! You want the horse to understand that this rhythmic gentle touching aid means “pinch your tail – shorten your steps – slow down = collect!”The marvel of this game is that the horse will, once this is understood, also perform the pelvic tilt under the rider or on the long-reins. It later helps you to teach the piaffe, for example.

When you touch him on the dock, he will pinch his tail and tilt his pelvis. With shortened steps and hind legs further under his belly he will start to collect.

On the long reins:

  • So now you can apply the same touching aid from behind the horse and on the long-reins: in combination with a vibration of the reins, the horse will back up slowly, with shortened steps and lowered croup.  Pay attention to the fact that his head should remain relaxed and low, so the back is not hollowed.

Transitions:

  • Practise transitions from walk to back-up, first with a stop in between, later fluidly without. Then introduce transitions from trot to back-up! I use a special soft double click of the tongue for the rein-back as voice command, which follows the “back-up!” and continues for as long as I want him to keep going backwards.

Note:

  • Always watch for relaxed ears and lowered head. If the horse gets cramped up – go back one step in your training! Concentrate on not pulling!

From rhythmic trot directly into the rein-back - and again to trot, all with slow and shortened strides, will lead to piaffe-like steps with more collection.

Slowing down:

  • Once the horse is fully relaxed, try out whether he will understand to collect a bit within the gait of walk or trot, when you apply the same touching aid on his dock. (Go back to earlier games, if this makes him nervous!) As soon as he does slow down, GIVE and acknowledge  instantly with “good boy!” Pause, rest and feed!

Cradle in the long-reins:

  • On page 247 of my book “From Leading to Liberty” (p. 244, also demonstrated in my films “Playing with Horses”) we play the game “Cradle in the long-reins”.
Tempo verlangsamen:

The horse learns in the "Cradle" to play with his gravity point.

  • The Cradle teaches the horse to play even more consciously with his gravity point and thereby collect more. This game has very little forward and backward movement, and in the end leads to near piaffe like steps.
