Geschichte des Pferdes – Teil 19

Our Times 8

Pro or contra horse racing?

  • I already stated in the last Blog that I am personally not a friend of racing. Horses are rarely raced purely for sport – the prime interest and importance lies in the gambling aspect associated with it – an activity which generated a world-wide market worth around US $ 115 billion in 2008, 300 billion Euro yearly in  Europe – 35 billion of this are Euros bet on horses.

Two ways to make money

  • In racing there are two ways of making money – we looked into the betting aspect in the last Blog – betting happens at the races and on the internet. This goes into the billions. The other one is prize money for the owners of the horses.

Purse settlement

  • The prize money to be won by the successful horses depends on the importance of the race.  The higher the class of the test, the higher also the prize money. Normally the first four horses placing in a race receive money prizes, sometimes also place five or six, in an approximate proportion of 10 : 4 : 2 : 1. In Germany they have a distinction between a class A or B race, whereby the purse of class B lies under € 2,000.
  • The international standardized races must guarantee a basic purse, which at the time is:
  • 12,000 € for the winner of a listed race,
  • 40,000 € for the winner of a group-III-race
  • 90,000 € for the winner of a group-I- race.
  • The highest prize money is offered at the Dubai World Cup with 6 million dollars alone for the winner.

Zt.
Yes - when they are flying by some look really beautiful - but is it worth the price ?

  • None of this is profitable to the horse in any way – on the contrary: many horses have to run while they are still not fully grown and the exertion causes great damage to their still developing bodies.

Here we don’t really deal with horses – we deal with hopes and dreams of people, who wish to make it big by luck (not work) – as well as the social aspect of seeing and being seen at the races.

Cost of training:

  • To keep and train a race horse costs 20,000 Euro per year for training and care. Some horses bring that money back to their owners by winning half a million per year in prize money. But those are the rare exceptions. Most horses are trained for a while, lose money for their owners and get rejected. This is not because they are lacking heart, but mostly because they get physically damaged – they simple have to start this super hard job way too early. A lot of horses are only 2 years old when they start (and their training started significantly earlier of course). They sustain bones fractures, torn ligaments, damaged feet. Being fixed with new horse shoes before almost every race can destroy their hooves, shoulder and back pain are common.

Very many pictures show clearly tht racing is NO FUN for the horses depicted.

  • From all rich race horse owners (as well as from the enthusiastic spectators) you will always hear that it is “the passion, the joy of working with horses and the excitement”, which are so wonderful about this sport. “The joy of working” is rather hypocritical as neither of the two groups directly work with the horses – this could only be stated by the jockeys or the trainers. The passion is the passion of gamblers.
  • Only the excitement is real – especially for the horses. You see the horses snort and spook before the race. They are nervous and many refuse to enter the starting gates. Many horses get ulcers from the stress. While they are running they get beaten.

You always hear:

  • “A horse only runs when he feels like running.” This is more a pious wish of race track lovers than reality. Horse racing costs horse lives – many horse lives!
  • Vet Dr. Maximilian Pick worked on the track in Munique for over 20 years and then quit, because he just cannot stand it any longer. He says: “many horses run as if in fear of theirs lives. A horse is a flight animals and runs away, when it is threatened…”

Man hört doch immer:

When they fall it is very often fatal - jockeys have a better survival rate.

A horse only runs when he feels like running??

  • Here a newspaper clipping by the Daily Mail, April 29th 2015:

EXCLUSIVE: Dozens of winning horses drugged at Kentucky Derby race course – and one was on SPEED. Official figures reveal shame of trainers at Churchill Downs ahead of nation’s favorite race

  • Official documents seen by Daily Mail Online show 46 horses tested positive for banned substance at the racing track in last year
  • One had methamphetamine – speed – in its system and others were on painkillers so they could perform despite injuries
  • Charity PETA says use of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs leads to deaths of horses on American courses
  • It releases video urging people not to bet on Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, the biggest day in American racing calendar
  • WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT

Dr. Maximilian Pick:

  • “When many horses run at the same time, there is a group feedback– the faster the gallop the greater the fear.” This is embedded in their genes – horses can’t help it.

97 % of all injuries on the race track are broken bones and torn ligaments - where is the beauty ? 97 % aller Verletzungen auf der Rennbahn sind gebrochene Knochen und gerissene Bänder - wo ist die Schönheit des Ganzen ?

  • The fear is also not without reason: every year about 20 horses in Germany alone die directly on the track or directly after the race. How many get put down during training is not ascertainable in any statistic, because the interested parties in the sport do not wish it to be known. I can find no statistics for the rest of the world except the site:

www.horsedeathwatch.com

  • who state: 1316 Deaths in 3147 days

www.horsedeathwatch.com

  • die aussagt: 1316 Todesfälle in 3147 Tagen.

the website "horsedeathwatch.com" states: 1316 deaths in 3147 days - quite a massacre !

Dr. Maximilian Pick:

  • “When this (running panic of the group) happens often, horses develop a psychological race track neurosis and they become very difficult to handle.”
  • If you understand German and watch this movie on line:  (Click Here)

  • from point 28:30   you will see scenes that will bring tears to your eyes – at least I hope so.
  • The horses which got sorted out as being money losers are, after the physical damages they sustained and the neurosis they developed in their brains, not especially suitable as riding horses, and many of those therefore also end up at the knacker.
  • But even if they find a new owner, I think that the statement that those horses become hard to manage is a very important statement, because a happy and trustful horse is easy to handle, no matter what breed or bloodline!

Read on !!

Dr. Maximilian Pick:
