Party Spielchen – Blog 08 – Garrocha Teil 2

  • In the last Blog we finished by acquainting the horse with our new Garrocha toy, and then dragged it behind us. We saw that the horse might get nervous at this point and we might need our helper to re-assure him.
  • As we try to get closer to our Garrocha ideal, we will recognize several problems:
  • you lose the centre of your circle
  • the horse does not clear your pole with his head
  • you lose your Garrocha…

Circles on the right hand:

  • Let’s start by practising those tight circles. In the film you see that Beau and Chelsea,  now  in canter, have more and more difficulty keeping their Garrocha in the middle! You will find that balancing becomes much more difficult for your horse after slowly increasing the tempo from walk, to trot and then to canter – with centrifugal force he will start to drift away from your pokey-centre!
  • For your own hand-coordination right hand circles will be easier at the beginning, so start here. There are several ways to hold the Garrocha – check the drawings in the book. Leaning the pole elegantly on your shoulder is also shown further down in a video clip. First use the easiest overhand grip (dwg 3 in the book). Now you poke your Garrocha (on the right side of the horse) into the ground – this time its tip ought to stay in one place! I first marked the centre of my circle with a bit of orange spray on the ground, because as my horse and I produced the most interestingly varied ovals and I had to repeatedly regain the centre. You’ll learn to appreciate those perfectly ROUND circles the vacqueros produce in their shows!!
  • In the book I show two additional ways of holding the Garrocha on your right hand circles in dwg. 4 and 5 – the underhand grip and the shoulder lean (see later movie).
Zirkel rechterhand:

Right hand circle - overhand grip. Left hand circle underhand grip. Rechterhand - Obergriff. Linkerhand Untergriff.

Right hand circle – overhand grip. Left hand circle underhand grip.
Rechterhand – Obergriff. Linkerhand Untergriff.

The left hand circle:

  • On the left things get a bit more complicated: you have three options for holding the Garrocha. Either you poke it in front of you with an overhand grip (dwg. 9 in the book) or an underhand one as shown in the photo. Or you carry the Garrocha behind your shoulder with an underhand one (dwg. 10). To achieve riding a perfectly round circle will keep you busy for quite a while – even in walk!

Changing hands –  the half turn:

  • The trick is, of course, how to GET from the right to the left hand circle and back!
  • You practised turn independently from the Garrocha Game before (from the ground like in the Waltz game or riding with both hands) and got your horse used to your voice command “Turn!”, which will now greatly help him to understand, what you want.
  • From the right hand circle you entice the horse to turn right under the Garrocha while neck-reining him, which will seem very strange to him indeed! How our lovely boys willingly contort!! Lots of praise if the horse plays along!
Zirkel linkerhand:

Get him to bend under the Garrocha - not so easy!

Get him to bend under the Garrocha – not so easy!

  • Have your helper close by to reassure and guide your horse, while you bump him on the head with the Garrocha during your first clumsy attempts. Somehow in this learning phase neither your arm nor the pole are ever long enough…

On the left circle you carry the Garrocha in front of you.

On the left circle you carry the Garrocha in front of you.

  • Now you are on the left circle holding the pole in front of you and need to get back to the right: again you neck-rein him sharply (this time to the left) trying to hold the Garrocha in such a way that it clears the horse’s head as he ducks under. In these turns rein-aids are not enough – you have to dissociate your own body at the waist line, twisting as much as your flexibility allows you while keeping your shoulders and hips horizontal!  This leads to your pelvis turning and automatically produces the correct seat aid (outer leg sliding slightly back and so on) without you having to think about it at all.

  • In the film you see how we practise sticking to the centre of the circle (Peter still has a tendency to drift, especially to the left of the picture). Then we practise holding the Garrocha with a shoulder-lean – much harder for me! And we practise half-turns under the Garrocha to get from the right to the left hand circle.
  • In the video you see that Czar reacts nicely and promptly to the voice commands “Ho!” and “turn!”, which is very helpful.
  • Remember: when you turn your horse under the Garrocha, you have to take him along like a dancer guiding his partner – your body has to do what his body is supposed to do – instead of trying to force him under the stick by himself! If he doesn’t enjoy the experience of his increasing agility around the pole, he will never be a good Garrocha player!

Full circles!

  • The climax of our Garrocha game – full turns under the pole! The principle is the same right or left – neck-rein your horse and dissociate your own body sharply, lifting the pole as high as possible to clear the horse’s head.
  • You can see in the pictures how you have to change the grip on the Garrocha, as you complete the second half of the full turn, otherwise you will get a knot in your wrist!

The grip on the Garrocha must ajust in the full turn.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

  • Of course you practise all of this in walk first and increase the tempo later, once the horse has understood the game.
  • Yes, it is true, we haven’t advanced to doing the full turns in elegant canter pirouettes yet. But then, we are not vaqueros, neither are we Olympic dressage riders – our field is playing with horses. And what a nice game this is! All my horses loved it. And as I repeated it years later with my now 33 year old Beau, he shows that he hasn’t forgotten any of it and those tight turns still make him proud. It is a most motivating game!

Have fun practising!
