Party Games – Blog 01 – Backward Slalom at Liberty

Party Games – Part 01

Party Games – Teil 01

  • In this new series I want to suggest some little games for your warm-up or cool-out time after your work with your horse.
  • I have always played with my horses – as well as ridden them, and vaulted on them, and hacked out with them – one certainly does not preclude the other! Because playing is such a good motivator that it would be a pity not to use it during your training – it DOES make the horses happy!
  • Of course it is of utmost importance that you are playful while playing… and not merely demanding obedience! That would not be much fun for your horse – especially since most games are a lot more challenging  (for BOTH: trainer and horse) than they might look at first glance.
  • To point you in the right way – to tell you how to offer those games to your horse in small steps and thereby to create a feeling of success at each step – for this I wrote my book “From Leading to Liberty” and made my films “Playing with Horses”.
  • Obviously I would like you to purchase both – for the happiness of your horse! (because believe me, the author does not get rich on such projects…) In the Blogs I can only scratch the surface of all the information you will find there.
  • So the simple games (and you are only allowed to call them simple once you have mastered them!) we introduce here I will call:

Some Party Games for you and your horses! Here is the first:

Backward Slalom – conscious placing of the hind feet!

  • In the book „From Leading to Liberty“ we show on page 74 the game „Backwards through Barrels“, with a more complicated pattern and on the rope. Now we want to try an interesting little game, which we use in the warm-up or cool-down phase of our work, without the necessity of lugging barrels, at liberty! Variety is the spice of life!

Pre-requisite for success is two-fold:

  1. The horse must have learned previously to back up in a straight line on finger-signs or aids with the whip. (For straightness control I have drawn our centre line in the sand). Here the backwards motion should not falter or stop – not so easy! Also the rhythm of the steps shall be as even as possible.

Chest out and stare! Brust heraus und anstarren!

Chest out and stare!
Brust heraus und anstarren!

  • The trainer keeps a straight posture, sternum out, and stares the horse straight into both eyes – that is the request for a yield. In the pre-exercise I use two whips, which I move gently and rhythmically forward and backward in front of his chest. (You remember that rhythm is calming and therefore sign of friendship)
  • 2. The horse must be acquainted with the pointing aid for the yielding of the hindquarters.

Stare or point at the hip bone to make the hindquarters yield.

Stare or point at the hip bone to make the hindquarters yield.

  • For this the trainer positions herself in a 45° angle to the pelvis of the horse and stares at his hip bone. Where staring alone does not suffice, can tap him slightly with the whip (also rhythmically). For this I use only one whip (and the other one is in neutral position, pointing to the ground).
  • While turning around the forehand with the hindquarters the front legs shall not run away forward, but rather move on a very small circle (as if standing in a small Hula Hoop). As long as the horse tends to move forward, one has to stop after each step and praise, until he has understood the concept. (If needs be you can use the second whip for this by holding it across and in front of his chest to prevent a forward step).
  • Naturally the trainer has to move along with the horse in order to maintain the 45° angle! All should happen calmly and without hectic.

Backward in a straight line at liberty
  • In this video clip we show how Beau steps Backward on a straight line – he is calm and attentive, and his steps are more or less of the same length. I’m satisfied with it.

Hindquarter yield at liberty

  • While turning around the forehand he stays nicely in one spot with the front legs and the crossing hind leg steps cleanly in front of the other – this too is correct. We train on both sides as usual.

My body language as aid:

  • Now I plan to let my horse draw a regular serpentine line across my marked centre line, while stepping backward fluidly – with equal size curves on the right and the left!
  • This is not an easy task for Beau at first attempt and my body language must be very clear! I use both whips – one I hold across and in front of his chest to signal a continuous backing up, the other one serves as indication to change direction from right to left and vice versa, by demanding a hind quarter yield as described above.

Language of the Whips

  • For this I must of course also change sides. I hold my whips at about 90° to each other. My voice commands are “back” and “over” for the curves.

Here comes the main difficulty for Beau:

  • Now, you see, in order to maintain the fluid backward motion, he has to step with the crossing leg behind the other one, instead of crossing in the front, like he learned before!

How the feet have to cross to ensure fluid backward motion
  • Here you will discover during your training that your horse has a „sunny side“ (we call it the chocolate side) on which things are easier. Two mistakes will likely now appear:
  • The horse briefly plants his hind feet next to each other, which results in a faltering step and interrupts the fluidity of the movement.
  • Or he even crosses with the outer foot (seen relative to the curve) in front of the other, as he did in the hindquarter yield. This totally stops the backward motion, as like this he can’t round the corner!

There! Now we show the entire Slalom!

Beau’s complete backward Slalom at liberty
  • So! How many mistakes did you detect? Which side is Beau’s “chocolate side” and on which are things more complicated?
  • I hope you heard how Beau constantly receives encouragement and gets feed-back from me instantly, when he did something correctly, as well as an instant “nein” (German for “no”), when a mistake occurs. His ears are attentively pointed to the back the whole time and you can see clearly, how much he concentrates on his back feet.
  • Na!

The track!
Here is our track – I think we succeeded quite nicely!

Have fun practising!
