Gesellschaftsspielchen für Ihr Pferd – Teil 05

“Over the Whip!”

• In this game we broaden our horse’s understanding of the ordinary “send and call” games, which you were introduced to in the book “From Leading to Liberty”. I started playing “Over the Whip!” because in my present boarding stable we are not allowed to have any toys in the arena, no poles… no jumps… – what to do for playful relaxation?

• As I said in my book in the chapter of “Send and Call Games”, page 226, Game 57: sending your horse somewhere – after a bit of liberty training (for which you bought my book, of course) is relatively easy – he might run away after you send him, but at least you sent him! You will, however, “…discover that horse logic is not the same as human logic. Your horse will run off in the direction to which you point, and, with a happy face and lots of motivation, will run around the obstacle…” – because flight animals don’t waste energy without a good reason!

“Peitsche springen!”

• In diesem Spiel erweitern wir das Verständnis unseres Pferdes der normalen „Schick-und-Ruf“ Spiele, die Sie aus dem Buch “From Leading to Liberty” schon kennen. Ich habe „Über die Peitsche“ zu spielen angefangen, da ich in meinem jetzigen Stall keinerlei Spielzeug in der Halle haben darf, keine Stangen… keine Sprünge… was also tun für spielerisches Entspannen?

• Wie ich im Kapitel der “Send and Call Games”, Seite 226, Spiel 57 gesagt habe: sein Pferd nach etwas Freiheitsdressur (wofür Sie schließlich mein Buch gekauft haben!) wohin zu schicken ist leicht – vielleicht rennt es weg, nachdem Sie es schicken, aber wenigstens haben Sie es geschickt! Sie werden jedoch entdecken, daß Pferdelogik nicht wie Menschenlogik ist. Das Pferd wird zwar in die gezeigte Richtung laufen, dann aber, mit glücklichem Gesicht und viel Motivation um das Hindernis herum rennen – denn Fluchttiere verschwenden nie ohne Grund ihre Energie!

• If you want to motivate your horse to go over a jump, you can best explain it by doing it together first. Very good for your own fitness! You have to radiate motivation – and praise lots. Of course you don’t pull on your horse – that would kill the fun. The introductory steps to the games are all in the book. Now the horse has understood that we are playing “jump” and it suffices to give him a good start in the right direction.

• Wenn Sie Ihr Pferd motivieren wollen über einen Sprung zu gehen, dann erklären Sie das am besten, indem Sie es zuerst gemeinsam machen. Sehr gut für Ihre Fitness! Man muß dabei Motivation ausstrahlen – und viel loben. Natürlich zieht man nie am Pferd – dann wäre der Spaß schon vorbei. Die Vorübungen sind alle im Buch. Jetzt hat das Pferd verstanden, daß wir „springen“ spielen und es genügt, ihm einen guten Start in die richtige Richtung zu geben.

• Horses know that running parallel is a sign of friendship and will be highly motivated. Beau’s ears are pointed attentively to Chels – you can see that both are truly playing!

• Pferde wissen ja, daß paralleles Rennen ein Zeichen von Freundschaft ist und werden schon daher hoch motiviert sein. Beaus Ohren sind hier aufmerksam auf Chels gerichtet – man sieht ganz klar, daß beide wirklich spielen!

• Calling a horse back over an obstacle is more difficult, but for the whip-game not relevant. Just such a nice photo!

• In the next clip you see how you can direct the “sending” by pointing and giving the horse whip aids at the hind quarters for added energy

• Ein Pferd über einen Sprung zurück zu rufen ist ein bißchen schwerer, aber für unser Peitschenspiel nicht relevant. Es ist nur so ein schönes Foto!

• Im nächsten Clip sehen Sie wie man das “Schicken” dirigieren kann, indem man mit Zeigen und Peitschenhilfen an der Hinterhand für mehr Energie sorgt.

• So first we build up motivation by going over the jump together! Then we send the horse by himself – you see how we contained the horse between the trainer and the fence to make the learning experience clear and easier. We have eliminated the opportunity to go around the jump although the horse is at liberty. Then we send the horse without accompanying him – finger signs and voice encouragement suffice! (In the “Call Games” of the book you also learn how to get the horse to come back to you over the same obstacle at liberty).

• Zuerst also bauen wir Motivation auf, indem wir gemeinsam hüpfen. Dann senden wir das Pferd alleine los – auch hier haben wir es zwischen Trainer und dem Zaun etwas eingeschlossen, um die Lernerfahrung klar und leichter zu machen. Wir haben damit die Gelegenheit genommen um den Sprung herumzurennen, obwohl das Pferd frei läuft. Dann schicken wir das Pferd ohne Begleitung – Fingerzeigen und Stimmkommando genügen als Ermunterung! (In den „Rufspielen“ des Buchs lernen Sie auch, das Pferd in Freiheit über das Hindernis wieder zurück zu locken).

• But now I want to introduce a new element to our “Over the Jump” game! Since I don’t have real jumps at my disposal, I want Beau to accept a whip presented to him as the obstacle.

• The first explanation must be simple! My horse is well prepared, because he learned to “count his legs” over a pole already in Game 30 (Book: From Leading to Liberty) on page 136. The added difficulty here is that I have to present the obstacle in one hand and keep him going with the other! He does step over – but when asked to jump it, he shows the typical energy-saving mode of the flight animal – and goes around my “jump” every time. So I have to make the task easier.

• Aber jetzt will ich ein neues Element in das „Over the Jump“ Spiel einführen! Da ich keine wirklichen Hindernisse zur Verfügung habe, möchte ich, daß Beau meine hingehaltene Peitsche als Hindernis akzeptiert.

• Die erste Erklärung muß einfach sein! Mein Pferd ist gut vorbereitet, da er im Spiel 30 (Buch: From Leading to Liberty) auf Seite 136 schon „Beine zählen“ gelernt hat. Die zusätzliche Schwierigkeit hier ist nun, daß ich mit einer Hand das Hinderniss präsentieren muß, während die andere versucht ihn am Gehen zu halten. Beau steigt lieb darüber – als ich ihn aber zum Springen anrege, verfällt er in den typischen „Energiespar-Modus“ des Fluchttiers – und rennt jedes Mal außen herum.

• In this clip I present my whip in a very calm fashion – Beau can inspect it and decide to jump at his will. I frame him between me and the wall, so he cannot circumvent the obstacle – although he could of course refuse or run away! But it is clear that he knows what to do and he wants to play – the first jump is still a bit tentative, but then he performs his new trick with more and more energy and enthusiasm. Lots of heartfelt praise !!

• In diesem Clip präsentiere ich ihm die Peitsche ganz ruhig – Beau kann sie erkunden und sich selbst zum Springen entschließen. Wieder schließe ich ihn zwischen mir und der Wand ein, damit er nicht das Hinderniss vermeidet – obwohl er natürlich verweigern oder abhauen könnte! Aber es ist klar, daß er weiß was er soll und er will ja spielen! Der erste Sprung ist noch ein bißchen zögerlich, dann aber zeigt er den neuen Trick mit mehr und mehr Energie und Begeisterung. Viel echt gefühltes Lob ist angebracht!!

• Now I slowly retreat from the wall more and more. I don’t pay attention to the beauty of the jump at this point, but rather praise Beau a lot for not avoiding it. We are making progress! (Sorry that the end result hasn’t been filmed yet – helpers are missing!)

• Jetzt entferne ich mich peu a peu von der Wand. Ich beachte erst mal nicht die Schönheit des Sprunges, sondern lobe Beau lautstark dafür, daß er das Hindernis nicht vermeidet. Wir machen Fortschritte! (Sorry, daß das Endresultat nicht gefilmt wurde – mir fehlen die Helfer!)
