De-Spooking – Part 07

Ent-Scheuen – Teil 07

  • Although you helped your horse to improve his self-confidence by playing “Sure-Feet” games in blog 6, perhaps your horse still tends to be nervous when hacking out? In that case you must de-spook him now!
When the threatening object retreats the horse can become more courageous

When the threatening object retreats the horse can become more courageous

  • You can of course not do this by hanging on to him tightly – any flight animal must be allowed to move his feet, when he fears for his life! So you can only achieve it by proving to him that you, as his trustworthy leader, know for sure there is no reason for flight.

If the leader is not nervous there IS no reason for flight!

  • While you can of course acquaint your horse with objects, which might frighten him, such umbrellas or plastic bags, you would never reliably bomb-proof him that way.  You can never really foresee what might spook him next. Often it is not even the object itself, which makes him nervous, but the fact that today he sees this object in an unfamiliar place or context!

  • A horse can feel his human’s Adrenaline and heartbeat rise – so you can’t fool him – and pretend to be calm when you are nervous.
  • In the book “From Leading to Liberty” and the films “Playing with Horses” we give many suggestions how to convince your horse to take the cue for flight or no-flight from his more experienced leader – You! Learn how it is done!

  • How nice it is to have fully de-spooked horses!
    How safe and sound !!
  • Wie schön, “ent-scheute” Pferde zu haben!
    Wie sicher und verläßlich !!

  • The bit of time, which you must invest in making your horse bomb-proof, is really worth your while. Never forget that your horse can only be really happy with you, if he feels safe with you as his leader!

Have FUN !!
