Introduction to playing with horses:
My background is vaulting, which in my opinion is still the very best way to start with any equestrian activity! I began vaulting at age ten and was active as a vaulter and then trainer for the next 40 years.
Vaulting teaches you to balance. The necessary stretching makes you limber – and the result is confidence, because you know that falling off the horse means landing on the ground, but it does not have to mean injury.
Riding free!
This kind of confidence of course facilitates playing with horses in liberty as we do. But it is not the only path there! The more your horse can trust you (because you learn to be a good leader) the more reliable he becomes in turn.
In my latest book “From Leading to Liberty” I suggest 100 training games to get to that point.
But before playing you must study the introduction! In order for your horse to feel safe with you, you have to understand his nature, his needs, cemented in his genes, and which you must allow him to live out before he can get into a playful mood.

Also your horse can only feel happy if he has a feeling of success – and to make this achievable you need to know the rules of effective training and learning. Mere love is not enough !
Only proper training leads to high motivation.
When your horse is motivated he will stick to you in liberty – by which we mean voluntary, “being free”! Not confined! No round pen! No fences needed…
Liberty is a dialogue between friends!
And he can only understand your wishes if you speak his language – which is of course body language! That is where the natural horseman-ship comes in.
Your body language must be clear, meaningful and consistent. In my book I show with hundreds of drawings how to communicate with your horse – this will become second nature to any one who will try out to play those games.

Mit Pferden spielen

Ich habe mit Voltige angefangen – meiner Ansicht nach die beste Art jedes Reiten zu beginnen! Ich voltigiere seit ich 10 Jahre alt bin und war dann die nächsten 40 Jahre auch Trainer.
Beim Voltigieren lernt man Balance. Das nötige Stretching macht einen beweglich – und das Ergebnis ist Selbstvertrauen. Man erfährt, daß ein Sturz zwar “unten ankommen” bedeutet, nicht aber Unfall oder Verletzung.
Diese Art Selbstvertrauen macht das Spielen in Freiheit natürlich leichter. Aber es ist nicht der einzige Weg dahin! Je mehr das Pferd Dir vertraut (da Du lernst ein guter Anführer zu sein) desto verläßlicher wird es auch für Dich.
In meinem Buch “From Leading to Liberty” schlage ich 100 Training Spiele vor, um dieses Vertrauen herzustellen. Das Buch ist in leicht verständlichem Englisch geschrieben und reich illustriert ( die DVDs sind auch mit deutscher Tonspur!)

Aber bevor man spielt, muß man die Einleitung studieren! Damit das Pferd sich sicher fühlen kann, muß man seine Natur verstehen, – seine Bedürfnisse, die es in den Genen verankert hat. Es muß seine Instinkte ausleben dürfen, bevor es Lust aufs Spielen haben kann.
Auch kann das Pferd nur glücklich sein, wenn es ein Erfolgserlebnis hat – und um das zu erreichen, muß der Mensch die Regeln von effektivem Training und Lernen befolgen.
Liebe allein ist nicht genug !
Nur korrektes Training führt zu hoher Motivation. Ein motiviertes Pferd bleibt auch in Freiheit bei seinem Menschen – freiwillig! Nicht eingesperrt! Kein Round Pen! Ohne Zäune…
Freiheitsdressur ist ein Dialog zwischen Freunden! Und diese Unterhaltung kann nur in seiner Sprache stattfinden – das ist Körpersprache. Daher lernen wir auch “natural horseman-ship”.
Unsere Körpersprache muß klar, konsequent und bedeutungsvoll sein. Im Buch zeige ich mit vielen Illustrationen wie man mit seinem Pferd so kommuniziert – dies wird dann ganz natürlich im täglichen Umgang mit seinen Pferden.
