Shaping Law # 7:

7) The Seventh Law states: “When one shaping procedure is not eliciting progress, find another”

• Why do so many people not even realize that there is no progress? Why is it so hard to stay flexible? This law means that although the handbook tells you to touch the horse’s belly with a whip on the side where you want him to lie down, you do not continue to follow these instructions after five attempts, if your horse misunderstands this aid over and over.
• If you insist on an aid, which your horse totally rejects or doesn’t understand, and which therefore does not help, you will only frustrate him and yourself.  Blaming the “wrong” instructions, just because your horse chooses to learn in a different way, does not get you anywhere.

Gebot des Formens # 7:

7) Das siebte Gebot besagt, daß man ein anderes Vorgehen finden muß, wenn die momentane Handlungsweise keinen Fortschritt bringt.

• Warum erkennen so viele Menschen nicht einmal, wenn kein Fortschritt stattfindet? Warum ist es so schwer flexibel zu bleiben? Dieses Gebot bedeutet, daß Sie, obwohl das kluge Buch Ihnen vorschreibt das Pferd an der Seite des Bauchs mit der Gerte zu touchieren um sich abzulegen, Sie das nicht tun sollten, wenn sich nach fünf Versuchen herausstellt, daß Ihr Pferd diese Hilfe immer wieder mißversteht!
• Wenn man sich eine Hilfe versteift, die das Pferd ablehnt und die daher ja nicht hilft, werden Sie es und sich selbst nur frustrieren. Die Schuld auf „falsche“ Anleitungen zu schieben, nur weil Ihr Pferd eben anders zu lernen wünscht, bringt Sie auch nicht weiter.

• The important thing is to realize that many roads lead to Rome – and while playing you DO have permission to do whatever it takes (except coercion!) to achieve your goal together. So be inventive! Don’t constantly “re-dial”, when your horse already told you that you have the wrong number!

• When you play with a horse who is traumatized with bad memories of humans, whips or ropes, you might have to become very inventive! Rely more on body language, make your goal clear to him “thinking like a horse”. Never forget: When something does not work out, it is always the fault of the trainer! It is your responsibility to find a way which makes success easily achievable to your horse – so don’t demand! Learn to explain better! Keep in mind: it is the result that counts!

• Wichtig ist doch zu realisieren, daß viele Wege nach Rom führen – und solange Sie spielen haben Sie Erlaubnis alles (außer Zwang!) zu versuchen, um Ihr Ziel gemeinsam zu erreichen. Seien Sie erfinderisch! Drücken Sie nicht ständig auf “Wiederwahl”, wenn das Pferd Ihnen schon gesagt hat, daß dies die falsche Nummer ist!

• Wenn Sie mit einem traumatisierten Pferd spielen wollen, das schlechte Erinnerungen an Menschen, Seile oder Peitschen hat, muß man sehr erfinderisch werden! Verlassen Sie sich mehr auf Körpersprache, denken Sie “Pferd”. Wenn etwas nicht funktioniert ist es immer die Schuld des Trainers! Es ist seine Verantwortung einen Weg zu finden, so daß ein Erfolg für das Pferd leicht erreichbar ist. Nur das Resultat zählt!

Shaping Law # 8:

8) The Eighths Law states: “Don’t interrupt a training session gratuitously; that constitutes a punishment.” (for the horse, the trainee)

• Therefore my students must turn off their cell phones while we play! You owe your horse the same respect that you owe the Symphony Orchestra, which performs for you! If you want him to pay attention to you – be fair and please do the same for him!
• If another person comes through the gate and starts talking to you, that person will have to wait for your attention until you have finished whatever aspect you are presently working on – so your horse had a success and can get a reward. He would not understand being dumped in the middle of a game, while he is trying so hard for you! He would be confused and lose trust in you!

8) Das achte Gebot besagt: Unterbrechen Sie niemals grundlos eine Trainingseinheit – das bedeutet (für das Pferd) eine Strafe!

• Daher müssen meine Schüler ihre Handys abstellen, wenn wir spielen! Sie schulden Ihrem Pferd denselben Respekt wie dem Symphonieorchester, wenn es für Sie spielt! Wenn Sie wünschen, daß das Pferd auf Sie aufpaßt, dann seien Sie fair und tun sie dasselbe als Gegenleistung.
• Wenn ein anderer Mensch durch das Tor kommt um mit Ihnen zu reden, so muß der warten, bis Sie mit dem Trainingsab-schnitt, an dem Sie gerade arbeiten, fertig sind, damit Ihr Pferd ein Erfolgserlebnis haben kann und seine Belohnung bekommt. Es würde es nicht verstehen, wenn Sie es mitten im Spiel einfach fallen lassen, während es sich so bemüht! Das würde es verwirren und zu einem Vertrauensverlust in Sie führen.

• You can only demand your horse’s full attention, if you are willing to give the same… Learn to respect him like a true partner!
