The Tyre-Tower!

• In my book „From Leading to Liberty“ the horses learned in Game 30 (on page 136) how to place their feet individually and on command. We mentioned that generally a horse has no good awareness of his hind feet – they usually just automatically follow in the direction where the front ones are going. When playing “sure feet” games, as we already did in the Mikado Game, you will find every time that they totally fascinate your horse – sureness of his feet is a most important physical achievement for a flight animal!

• On Page 142 of above book I explain in the Tyres Game how we expand the horse’s awareness of the control of his hind feet by letting him step through a row of tyres laid out on the ground without treading on the rubber. This sounds easier than it is for many horses! In the Blog series H.E.M. (Help, Explain and Motivate) in Blog 14 and 15 we saw how some horses run into great emotional problems here – as flight animals horses are claustrophobic by nature and some of them are incredibly afraid of anything resembling a trap.

• In meinem Buch „From Leading to Liberty“ haben die Pferde im Spiel 30 (auf Seite 136) gelernt ihre Hufe auf Kommando einzeln zu setzen. Wir hatten erwähnt, daß ein Pferd generell kein gutes räumliches Bewußtsein von seinen Hinterfüßen hat – die folgen normalerweise einfach in die Richtung, in die die vorderen losgelaufen sind. In den Trittsicher-Spielen werden Sie (wie schon im Mikado Spiel) merken, daß sie Ihr Pferd jedesmal total faszinieren – denn Trittsicherheit ist einem Fluchttier eine wichtige Errungenschaft!

• Auf Seite 142 im oben genannten Buch erkläre ich im Reifenspiel, wie wir das Bewußtsein des Pferdes über die Kontrolle seiner Hinterfüße erweitern, indem wir es durch eine Reihe von auf dem Boden ausgelegten Reifen steigen lassen, ohne daß seine Hufe auf das Gummi treten sollen. Das klingt einfacher, als es für viele Pferde ist! In der Blog Serie H.E.M. (Helfen, Erklären und Motivieren) haben wir gesehen, daß einige Pferde hier enorme emotionale Schwierigkeiten haben – als Fluchttiere sind sie ja klaustrophobisch und manche sind schrecklich ängstlich vor allem, was eine Falle sein könnte.

• The Triple-Stack of course resembles a perfect trap! Before you can attempt this, you must prepare your horse with Game 32 “Through Tyres” and then slowly build up from a single, to a double to a triple layer of tyres.

• The task for the horse is the same, but in addition to listening to your directives and feeling for the tyre, he must now also assess the height of the pile so as not to topple it.

• After letting the horse explore the new contraption, we have to explain to him, what we want and that this is indeed possible! He may wonder…

• Und der dreifach-Stapel sieht wie die perfekte Falle aus! Bevor man das also versucht, muß das Pferd mit Spiel 32 „durch Reifen“ angelernt werden, was man dann langsam von einfach, über doppelt bis dreifach ausgelegte Reifen aufbaut.

• Die Aufgabe für das Pferd ist dieselbe, nur daß es nun zusätzlich zum Stimmkommando-Befolgen und Nach-den- Reifen-Tasten noch die Höhe des Stapels einschätzen lernen muß, damit er nicht umfällt.

• Nachdem das Pferd das neue Ding untersucht hat, müssen wir ihm erklären, was wir wollen und daß dies tatsächlich möglich ist! Es mag das bezweifeln…

• So I lift Beau’s leg high and give hands-on directions show him that it is possible to place his foot in the inside of this tower without horrible things happening.

• Next and most important: your clear aids!

• Deshalb hebe ich Beaus Bein hoch und setze es „handgreiflich“ in den Reifenstapel, um ihm zu zeigen, daß dabei nichts Schreckliches passiert.

• Als Nächstes am wichtigsten: klare Hilfen!

• You give directions to your horse via voice, rope and whip. How to do this correctly is described in depth in the book “From Leading to Liberty” and well worth learning. In the picture you can see that my rope hand says: “step forward!”, while my whip touches Beau on his shoulder blade for a high leg lift.

• Man gibt dem Pferd Anweisungen via Stimme, Strick und Gerte. Wie man das korrekt tut,  ist im Buch “From Leading to Liberty” im Detail beschrieben und das ist es wirklich wert zu lernen. Im Bild sehen Sie, daß meine Seilhand sagt „ein Schrittchen vorwärts!“, während die Gerte Beau auf der Schulter berührt, um ein hohes Anheben des Beins abzurufen.

• In this picture my voice command would be “Ho!”. My rope hand shows a clear stop, as does my entire body language, and the whip is leaning against Beau’s leg to show him to hold it there.

• For the tyre game it is most important that the horse comes to a complete stop (body and mind) after each step. You already know from previous Blogs how difficult it can be for a horse to get going with a hind leg, when the front legs are parked. Don’t forget that in a new game all this can seem new to him, although he has done it before under different circumstances!

• In diesem Bild wäre meine Stimmhilfe „Ho!“. Meine Seilhand zeigt den Stopp klar an, wie meine ganze Körpersprache ebenfalls, und die Gerte ruht an Beaus Bein als Kommando es genau dort zu lassen.

• Für das Reifenspiel ist es wichtig, daß das Pferd nach jedem Schritt komplett zum Stillstand kommt (in Körper und Seele). Wir wissen ja schon von früheren Blogs, daß es für ein Pferd sehr schwierig sein kann seine Hinterbeine zu bewegen, wenn die vorderen geparkt sind. Vergessen Sie nicht, daß ihm in diesem Spiel all das neu vorkommen kann, obwohl es solche Dinge unter anderen Umständen schon kennengelernt hat!

• In this picture my lowered rope hand says “stay!” to tell Beau that the forehand is not supposed to move. The whip however gives a “symbolic touching aid” on the right hind leg – Beau is so far advanced in his training that pointing to the respective body part is enough. With a less experienced horse you would have to walk to his side so the whip can actually touch the hind leg which needs to get going next. In that case, you might want to use a much longer whip (difficult to handle accurately) or employ a helper in the front.

• In diesem Bild sagt meine abgesenkte Seilhand „stay!“ – zeigt Beau, daß er sich nicht fortbewegen soll. Die Gerte gibt aber eine „symbolische Touchierhilfe“ am rechten Hinterbein – Beau ist im Training so weit fortgeschritten, daß ein Zeigen auf das betroffene Körperteil genug ist. Mit weniger erfahrenen Pferden muß man eventuell auf die Seite gehen, damit die Gerte wirklich das Bein touchieren kann, welches als nächstes dran kommt. Man könnte auch eine viel längere Peitsche benutzen (schwieriger akkurat zu handhaben) oder vorn einen Helfer einsetzen.

• You can see in Beau’s face and ears that he is totally concentrated to the back. Here my rope hand directs him ever so slightly forward, while the whip keeps rhythmically touching his foot until it is right over the hole and he can set it down.

• In Beaus Gesicht und an seinen Ohren kann man ganz klar erkennen, daß er total nach hinten konzentriert ist. Hier dirigiert meine Seilhand ihn ganz leicht nach vorne, während die Gerte rhythmisch seinen Fuß berührt, bis er an der richtigen Stelle über dem Loch ist und er ihn absetzen kann.

• In this video clip you actually see Beau’s very first attempt to walk through the Triple Stack – and I am still very proud of him, how well he handled that!

• You can see that he is totally calm and reacts well to my voice aids. I use “this way!”, “Ho!” and “stay!”, Fini!” (i.e. “you can put your foot down”), “jaja!” to keep going (meaning “you are on the right path, keep trying!”) and of course “brav!” when he did exactly the right thing. Beau’s ears are fully concentrated to the back the whole time. Where he set his left hind next to the other he proved that he truly did not feel trapped – this is a very confined space!

• With our customary one-up-manship we had to make it more difficult!

• Many a “Tyre-Tower” did we build and topple! But Beau’s enthusiasm was not to be suppressed – and in the end he got it right! (Nice memories and gone are the days… at 33 years of age his rearing is now reduced to enthusiastic bunny hops!)

• In diesem Video sieht man Beaus allerersten Versuch durch den Dreifach-Stapel zu steigen – und ich bin immer noch stolz auf ihn, wie toll er das geschafft hat!

• Man sieht, daß er ganz überlegt handelt und sehr gut auf meine Stimmkommandos reagiert. Ich sage „this way!“, “Ho!” und “stay!”, Fini!” (das heißt “du kannst jetzt absetzen”), und natürlich „brav!“, wenn er das Richtige getan hat. Beau hat seine Ohren die ganze Zeit nach hinten konzentriert. An der Stelle, wo er seinen linken Hinterhuf neben den anderen stellt, zeigt er deutlich, daß er sich wirklich nicht „gefangen“ fühlt – denn hier ist er wirklich eingezwängt!

• Da wir anderen ja immer um eine Nasenlänge voraus sein müssen, wollten wir auch dieses Spielchen noch ein bißchen komplizierter machen!

• Viele Reifentürme haben wir gebaut und umgeworfen! Aber Beaus Begeisterung ließ nicht nach – und schließlich haute es hin! (Das sind schöne Erinnerungen… im Alter von jetzt 33 ist sein Steigen nicht mehr viel wert und er gibt sich mit Hasenhüpferchen zufrieden!)
